Piaget Emperador Coussin Tourbillon Ultra-ThinThe new 2011 Piaget Emperador Coussin Tourbillon Ultra-Thin automatic watch combines three years of research and development work and currently holds the title of the thinnest self-winding timepiece with a tourbillon escapement.Like it often happens in the world of haute horlogerie, the years of work were dedicated to the new automatic tourbillon movement, which is called Calibre 1270P.According to the Swiss watchmaker, the new caliber basically combines two other landmark movements: the Calibre 600P and the Calibre 1208P that powers the Piaget Altiplano ultra-thin watch, the thinnest in the world.Introduced in 2003 and 2010 respectively, the first of the two engines measures only 3.5 mm in height and is considered to be the world’s thinnest tourbillon movement, while the second, which is only 2.35 mm thick, is the world’s thinnest automatic movement.As a result, the Calibre 1270P is only 5.55 mm thick, which also makes it the thinnest self-winding tourbillon movement in the world! The movement is built of 269 components with some of its gear wheels being only 0.12 mm thick, which makes them as thin as an average human hair!Like the rest of the Piaget Emperador line, the watch is presented in a signature 46.5 mm wide and 10.4 mm thin cushion-shaped case made either of 18-carat rose (Ref. G0A36041) or white gold (Ref. G0A3604.)To provide a better view of the new movement, the watch’s dial is equipped with a transparent laser-engraved glass.The glass features two cutouts at 1 o’clock and 9 o’clock for the tourbillon carriage, that also serves as a subsidiary seconds hand, and a gold micro-rotor.Yes, this watch proudly displays not only its beautifully executed flying tourbillon, but also provides superb view at its guilloched gold micro-rotor, which is adorned with the Piaget coat-of-arms.Frankly speaking, I cannot remember of another timepiece featuring this kind of dial layout.As you can see on the pictures, the watch’s dial also features an off-set hour and minutes display at 5 o’clock with tapered hour markers pointing towards its center.The 2011 Piaget Emperador Coussin Tourbillon Ultra-Thin comes equipped with solid case-back, which is made of brushed gold and, besides another Piaget coat-of-arms, features a pair of cut-outs: one for the tourbillon carriage and the other for the power reserve indicator.Looks like this one is going to be among the most interesting models of 2011.
